Therapy For Adults
Often one of the first tasks is to learn self-regulation tools to better maintain emotional balance, mental clarity and resilience. There are likely components of acceptance, identifying our natural strengths, and some accountability.
As you are learning more about your thoughts, emotions and behaviors, we may discover underlying issues which are contributing to your suffering. Some of the topics discussed in therapy may be painful. You will rely on me as your therapist to support self-regulation and knowing when to slow down. Most sessions will have some emotional balance built in. Processing intense emotions, followed by self soothing and regulation.
Throughout the process I request feedback regarding the therapeutic relationship. Are your expectations being met? Do you feel heard and understood? Is there anything you would like to be different? This evaluation process is informal and frequent in the beginning. Your feedback is encouraged and appreciated.
It can be difficult to estimate the length of time it can take to reach your initial goals. Many clients report some improvements after a few sessions, with more dramatic shifts after 3-6 months.
I’m going to guess you did not casually decide to seek out a therapist. It’s likely things have been going wrong for a long time. Most clients report overwhelming worry prior to seeking help from a professional. I want to make the process a little less mysterious and anxiety provoking.
Not every therapist is a great fit for every client. We have individual education, training, style and personalities. The primary reason I created this website was to facilitate a more informed choice.
Following a brief phone consultation, I hope to provide a general sense of how therapy might look for your individual needs. I will also answer any questions you have. The next step is scheduling an intake assessment.
It is impossible and unethical to guarantee individual results, as everyone is different. These types of questions can be explored in more detail over the phone, and on-going as treatment progresses. Over time as you get closer to reaching your goals, we will begin communicating about closure. When you are better able to go on your own using new insights and tools, it may be time to reduce the frequency of treatment, and/or begin the process of saying goodbye. This can be a wonderful time to reflect on what it was like to make that first phone call, and what it is like now that you feel some increased sense of peace and stability.
I commend you for your willingness to explore therapy as an option to decrease suffering. My wish is for you to find a therapist which best suits you. Please feel free to email or call with any specific questions.
